All of the Broken Camels…

“Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like” – Will Smith

Did Will Smith really say that? Can’t be true. Turns out there is a website dedicated to figuring that kind of thing out here.  Who knew?

In Chasing Slow by Erin Loechner she shares the following tale: “An Arabian anecdote speaks of a man who loads his camel with a staggering amount of goods for the market. He piles, piles, piles and piles more until finally, one single wisp of straw sends the camel crashing down. The camel has broken it’s back”.

Have you taken a look around? The broken backs that surround you?

We’ve grown tired. Full SUV’s pulling into full garages attached to full homes. Full calendars and full work schedules.

But is it leading to a full life?

We have clothes, we have food, we have a roof over our heads. And we are stressed?

Will one more piece of straw finally tip the happiness scale?

Does it strengthen the case for minimalism?

Does your “stuff” make you happy or weigh you down?

  1. I’ve been trying so hard lately to adopt a more minimalist lifestyle and tight now, I have no idea how I’m going to do it when I look around my house. So I started going to therapy. All of a sudden, I had a deep desire to clean out my closets and stop hiding all the stuff. If you had seen my home 2 months ago, you’d have thought a hoarder lived here. But bit by bit, I am eliminating the “stuff” that weighs me down. And I’ve noticed that what’s inside vs. outside is leaving my life at about the same pace – how intereating! It’s not happening as fast as I’d like but I suppose I should be thankful for any progress at this point.
