Bubble Baths, Wine and Chocolate

“When the well’s dry, we know the worth of water.” – Benjamin Franklin

Recently I was having a conversation with a friend about self care. It seems to be a hot topic these days. Using a standard google search as a barometer of relevance, it was shocking to see almost 3 billion results around the notion.

Billion.

With a B.

Most of us think of self care as alone time for a walk, meditation, yoga…maybe a massage. Others may lean more towards bubble baths and chocolate and wine. Any form of escape, no matter how small.

All great things. No doubt! In fact, I may, or may not have, visited some 7 wineries today in northern Georgia. Shhhhh…I won’t tell if you don’t.

If you stop to think about it, however, are these things really nourishing your body? Your soul?

In the case of massage and yoga… probably… maybe even the bath. But chocolate and alcohol… probably not.

The best self care, it would seem to me, should be more focused on being your own best critic and parent. Guiding your life in a direction that, if viewed from the outside, is best for you.

Working at designing a life that, if all goes well, doesn’t need to be escaped from in the first place.

Right?

See you on the journey.
