Quick volcano detour lands us in Miami.

“As children know, there’s lots of fun in nonsense. We never stop benefiting from staying flexible, open and responsive, even in the midst of confusion.” – Joanna Scott

We awoke early this morning to make the long drive from Puerto Viejo de Talamanca to San Jose. While not many miles, traffic and the Costa Rican terrain can turn a 3-4 hour into 6-7 hours quickly. And recently the airlines have taken exception to arriving 3 hours late for your flight. Sheesh. What will they take next? Our dignity?

At any rate, we were on the road just after dawn, coffees in hand, ready for whatever the jungle would throw at us.

Traffic was thankfully light and we were making great time. So we did what any travelers of sound mind would do and arrived early, plenty of time to spare, and enjoyed the leisurely pace.

Of course we didn’t do that!!!

Seriously? Don’t you know me by now?!!

We took a detour that added, by my quick math and Waze calculations, three hours to our voyage and would get us in…sliding sideways…about an hour before our international flight.

What could go wrong?

I had never been to Volcán Irazú and it was high time we changed that.

Was it worth it?

Here are a few pics:

Nestled in the mountains about two hours south east of San Jose, Irazu is the tallest of Costa Rica’s many volcanos. Standing some 11,220 feet above see level. At least by my watch.

The same exact height as Cusco Peru, a point of reference for you Machu Picchu fans. The oxygen was just as sparse, as was the availability of coca tea.

We enjoyed our time there, jetted off to Juan Santamaría International Airport, and made it through security just in time for American Airlines to move our flight back 15 minutes…

Then an hour…

Then an hour and a half…

Then two hours…

Then to Miami instead of Charlotte, “Because Charlotte’s TSA office isn’t open late enough”.

Once onboard, the captain informed us that the incoming flight to SJO was diverted because of wind. Hard to believe given there wasn’t so much as a light breeze on the mountain and through the clouds just 3 hours prior..but I digress.

Looks like tonight we party in Miami.

Bienvenidos.

See you on the journey…
