“It takes great strength to be vulnerable enough to put your ass on the line, in public, and work towards a dream that feels like it’s slipping away. We all have eyeballs on us. Our family and friends are watching, and even if you’re surrounded by positive people, they will have ideas about who you are, what you’re good at, and how you should focus your energy. That shit is just human nature, and if you try to break out of their box you’ll get some unsolicited advice that has a way of smothering your aspirations if you let it.” – David Goggins from Cant Hurt Me
This weekend I was able to finish David’s book Can’t Hurt Me, and though he is a one of a kind individual, at times it felt as though he was speaking directly to me.
David has had a difficult and intense life. An abusive father and enduring racial tension were just the start. A Navy Seal who couldn’t swim…who also completed Army Ranger school and Air Force Tactical Air Controller training he’s also competed in more than 60 ultra marathons, held the world record for pull ups in 24 hours (over 4000) and on and on.
We couldn’t be more different…honestly, do you know anyone like this guy?…yet his words resonated with me on more than one occasion.
This is true for all of us.
Maybe you are watching a movie and the words spoken make you uncomfortable. Or maybe its song lyrics that are calling you out. Maybe it’s this blog or a newspaper article or a podcast.
The point is, if something makes you pause and reflect on your actions, pay attention. You don’t have to have anything in common with the author or actor or singer. Slow down in these moments. They are your inner compass. The mirror you build for yourself. Your opportunity to gain insight and improve.
They are talking to you.
I am talking to you…
See you on the journey…
