“Who would hire you to be a coach?”
This was the response I received from my not-so-significant other a few years back when I expressed that I might look into coaching part time as a profession.
Should your partner ever say something like this to you? Absolutely not. Had she come to me and said, “hey, I was thinking about training gerbils and sharpening crayons for a living”, I would at least have a conversation exploring it… but I digress…
So who would hire me to be a coach?
Turns out… a- lot of people.
At least once a week for the last 5+ years, someone, whether it be via text, in person, or even a semi stranger on social media would reach out…
“Can I buy you a beer and pick your brain for a few minutes?”
“My son is just graduating and needs some direction, would you mind spending some time with him?”
“I’m just getting started with my business, could you help me with xxx?”
The list goes on….
I’ll be the first to admit that this is almost completely due to social media, unless you happen to be a friend I associate with on a regular basis. In the last decade I’ve travelled to 40+ countries, the World Series, the Super Bowl, countless corners of America… on and on..… all while maintaining several successful businesses.
You see… it’s the perceived work life balance that people gravitate towards… and they crave… especially if you’re from the States…. But that’s a post for another day.
In the meantime, I am proud to say I’m engaged in an amazing program with Brown University, working towards my ICF Certification… and tomorrow I’m working with 6 new coach-ee’s. This is all pro-bono, of course, with the goal being to craft my expanding skills. In creating a more formal framework and drawing on my life and business experience, I hope to provide some real value to these first brave souls.
Moral of the story: Don’t die with your music still in you. It’s my guess that you have your own music to offer the world…whatever that may look like to you. It’s pulling at you from somewhere “down in there”.
When would now be a good time to start? If I can help… in any way… I’m an email or a phone call away.
See you on the journey…..
