You Don’t Just Have To Pee

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.

You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.

People are going back and forth across the door sill
Where the two worlds touch.

The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.

Rumi was a a 13th century Sufi poet who has been described as “the best selling poet” in the United States and beyond. His works are still widely read across the Persian speaking world and he is revered as a great spiritual teacher.

This particular poem of Rumi’s came to me, no doubt, through the works of my great mentor Wayne Dyer.

Unable to sleep, I awoke this morning at around 4:00 AM. I couldn’t help but be reminded of this poem, as I so often am, when for whatever reason, I find myself awake in the pre-dawn hours.

While I have known the words of this poem for many, many years, only today did I “not go back to sleep”. So here I am, writing to you…

Do you wake up at the same time many nights?  Did you know the most common time in the world is 3:44 AM? What is your time? Comment below!

In Chinese medicine, waking up at the same time each night has a distinct meaning and “diagnosis”. According to the ancient traditions, the energy zeniths of the body are connected to a clock system that is energizing different parts of the body at different periods of the day.

Typically the time between 3 am and 5 am is associated with the energy meridian of the lungs, and is also widely held as a signal of spiritual awakening. Messages from “out there”, if you will. This is what I have always taken the poem from Rumi to mean…

Wake up you idiot! You aren’t awake just because you have to pee. Pay attention!!
