Showing Up

“Eighty percent of success is just showing up” – Woody Allen

Isn’t that the truth.

We see it time and again in many facets of our lives, don’t we?

It’s a phrase I hear most often on my yoga mat, now that I go regularly to a class. Shout out to Yoga One! You see, I started my yoga practice back in the late 90’s, long before it was “cool” and everyone at the grocery store had their $100 fashionable organic yoga pants on. My first “how to’s” into the world of yoga were books and VHS tapes. VHS kids. Remember those? For the first 15 years of my practice I did yoga alone, never in a class. But I digress.

Yoga pants and shooting ranges… going together like water and cereal since 1986.

Nearly every instructor I have ever had, at the beginning of class, will commend the group on showing up. Showing up on your mat, and showing up for yourself. Set an intention for your practice sure, dive into the physical challenge of course, engage in the mental work why not! But… mainly…just show up.

In the business of building homes, you would be amazed…or maybe not?… at the number of other companies that will come to your home, listen to all of your needs, and then just disappear. Never to be heard from again. Baffling really. Why make the effort to meet in the first place? We hear it time and again. Simply showing up…wins us jobs.

It’s why I show up here, every day. It’s extremely rare that I know what I am going to write about when I wake up in the morning. Yet, for 60 days in a row now, I have shown up, and the words appear on the page.

Some may say the content here is not “cohesive”.

Is life?

There is a thread that winds its way through most of these posts…and maybe you grasp that. It’s my feeling that, at least some of you, very much do.

In the last 24 hours I have had more people reach out with feedback, questions, or comments about this blog than I have since it’s inception. Knowing someone out there in the ether is reading these words undeniably makes me feel good. Hearing “you inspire me” from someone out of the blue, makes me feel good. Someone with a question about a blog from a month ago and how they could use its content to improve some tiny facet of their life…makes me feel good.

But that’s not why I’m here.

That’s not why I show up.

I show up for myself. I show up because I made a commitment to myself to do so. I show up because some days that’s all you can do. And some days, that’s enough.

See you on the journey.
